Dear Friends of the Williamson County 4H Hoofpicks.
As many of you are aware, our 3rd annual Campout and Trail Ride is quickly approaching. The event will be held at Bluff Creek Ranch in Warda, TX (see the attached flyer), on May 13th through the 15th. As you may also be aware, the event is open to those outside of the club so I would appreciate very much if we would all pull together as a team and promote this event to all our horse loving friends and family.
It has always been a personal goal of mine that this event would provide a blessed opportunity to those horse loving families less fortunate than ourselves. As such, we have worked with the owners of Bluff Creek Ranch, the Nolan family, to keep the cost of this weekend very low so as to encourage as much participation as possible. It is now up to us to get the word out.
Bluff Creek provides sites for camping, trailers, and RVs, hook ups are on a first come first serve basis. The ranch provides clean bathrooms with hot showers, an Ice maker, fishing, beautiful trails, canoeing, and even the occasional Long Horn to chase around. The Hoofpicks club will be providing a free professional BBQ for the traditional Saturday Night dinner, and as a bonus, we are working on live music as well. For the Saturday night dinner, we ask that you bring a pot luck dish, desert, or whatever, to contribute to the feast. All other meals are your responsibility.
For the horses, there are two large holding areas, and two stalls that can be booked on a first come, first served basis. I respectfully ask that you contact John at the ranch to reserve a stall. Many folks bring panels to make small holding pens for the their horses. The are over 9 miles of trails at Bluff Creek, however, not all are appropriate for horse riding and those will be clearly marked as closed to horses. The remainder of the trails offer varied levels of difficulty and provide great opportunities for practicing horse control or just enjoying the pine woods. There are also beautiful wide open pastures to play in, and a small lake to swim with your horse if you so desire. Bring a camera!! None horse riding activities include fishing, canoeing, swimming, and hiking, or if you're like me, chillin.
The trail riding is of the hub and spoke type. This type of riding offers opportunities for saddle time that those without horses can take advantage of. I will be bringing an extra horse specifically for that purpose and I would ask that if you are so inclined, feel free to take someone on a trail ride when one of your horses is available. It goes without saying that this is completely optional, as a horse owner I fully understand the liabilities, safety issues, etc.
There is no agenda for the weekend, other than the Saturday night pot luck dinner, therefore, there are no planned group trail rides or events. Many of the club members have been to the ranch before, so if you want to put together a group ride and would like to have a guide, I am certain that can be accommodated.
For organizational and administrative purposes, I ask that each and every family that will be in attendance send me an email with the number of people and the number of horses that will be coming. I don't need names. This information will be used to understand the amount of meat to be purchased for the BBQ, and to understand how many horses will be there.
